Chapter 15
While their hosts were still unconscious, the mutated parasites wormed their way deeper into Jacob and Andrew, slithering the rest of the way down through the stomachs and coming to a rest within their small intestines. Once securely hidden away within their hosts, the parasites secreted neuroactive compounds which would eventually reach the brain via circulation, allowing the parasites to act as puppeteers to their now enslaved hosts. As the men slept, the creatures feasted, absorbing nutrients directly from their bodies at an alarming rate.
Hours later, Jacob groaned miserably as he began to awaken. He managed to push himself up from the floor and immediately fell back to his knees, clutching his stomach as hunger pains ripped through him. Crawling over on hands and knees, Jacob shook Andrew in an effort to revive him. âAndrew, wake up. Please, wake up.â
Andrew began to stir. His eyes hesitantly fluttered open. âWhat happened?â he asked, looking around in confusion before his eyes settled on Jacobâs face, the bottom of which was smeared with muck left behind by the nematode as it forced its way into his mouth. Andrew shot to a sitting position when he remembered his struggle with the mutated parasite. His hands shot to his face, and he frantically wiped the gunk from his mouth. âOh shit, shit, shitâ¦â he said in a panic. âIs it⦠Did itâ¦â
âYes, I think it did,â Jacob answered looking down at his stomach. âI think theyâre still inside of us.â
Andrewâs eyes bulged in fear, âWhat the fuck are we gonnaâ do?â he asked as a wave of hunger pains stabbed him in the gut. âAnd why am I so fuckinâ hungry?â
âI donât know,â Jacob answered before folding over as another intense wave of pain washed over him. He took a few seconds to regain his composure before attempting to speak again. âI think the hunger pains weâre feeling are due to the parasites absorbing nutrients from our bodies at an increased rate due to their mutations and size.â
âWhat does that mean? Whatâs gonnaâ happen to us?â Andrew managed to spit out between grunts of discomfort. âDo you think a dose of Albendazole would help?â
Jacob squeezed his eyes shut against another bout of stomach pain before responding. âItâs doubtful. With their increased size, a dosage high enough to affect them would probably be lethal to us. For now, I think our best course of action is to feed them.âAndrew looked around. âFeed them what? I need something now; my stomach is killing me. Iâve never been this hungry before.â
âI know. The parasites being newly hatched need an enormous amount of sustenance. Iâm optimistic that once we are able to initially placate them, weâll be able to stay ahead of their demands for nourishment.â He faltered in his speech as his stomach produced a clearly audible protest for food. âMaybe thereâs something in the kitchen we could snack on until weâre able to get something heartier.â
âThere isnât. I cleaned out the fridge two days ago. Itâs empty aside from soda and condiments.
